In the chilly shadows of the Aberdare Ranges in central Kenya lies a tiny lake. Lake Ol Bolossat – the only lake in Kenya’s Central Province – is the source of the Ewaso Narok River which flows silently underground towards the Lorian Swamp before emerging and tumbling down the 75 metres (256 feet) Thomson Falls into the boulder strewn gorge below and eventually joining the Tana River and flowing east into the Indian Ocean.
The Lake Ol’bolossat area is rich in flora and fauna, with over 200 plant species, over 180 bird species and over 15 species of mammals. There also species of fish, reptiles and amphibians.
Kichakani camp is situatiated 192Kms from Nairobi, just off the shores of Lake Ol Bollosat. The camp consists of furnished Wood Cabins, 'Manyattas', Camping facilities, a Restaurant, and a Bar and Grill.
The two main natural features of the midlands are the massifs of Mount Kenya and the Aberdare range. These mountains catch the clouds!
Aberdare National park contains a wide variety of landscapes ranging from dense indigenous forest to high moorland and mountain peaks.
Animals are plentiful, particularly in the salient area which includes a rhino sanctuary.
The drive into the park is magnificent with waterfalls and sensational views which more than compensates for the comparatively scarce wildlife, however, buffalo, elephants and colubus monkeys are most often seen.
Rarer sightings include those of lions, golden cats, and the Bongo- an elusive forest antelope that lives in the bamboo forest.
Animals like the eland and spotted and melanistic serval cats can be found higher up in the moorlands.
The high moorlands have some exceptional walking and three peaks- Satima (the highest) in the north, Kinangop in the south and Kipipiri, an isolated cone above the Wanjohi Valley, in the west- can be climbed relatively easily, given good conditions.
Outdoor activities include: game viewing, trekking and hiking, trout fishing, picnics, and bird watching.
